<itunes:summary>Capturing evidence of learning using video equipment, is now as easy as ABC, teachers can use their mobile phones to collect evidence of learning, and use the information for Internal/External Verification purposes.
It is very helpful to use camera equipment to assess;

Learners’ report on term activities and difficulties
Students’ interactions during classroom events
Students' construction of knowledge in basic design theory and hands-on activities (in my case, ability to demonstrate how to use software packages, and creative ideas)
Students' ability to present information

This technique of collecting evidence of learning is very effective in helping the student improve on/developing a range of communication skills such as;-

Conveying ideas
Expressing thoughts and feelings
Interact with other students within a set context (out if their comfort zone)
Presenting information

<itunes:summary>This term you will be an opportunity for you to learn how to use Photoshop creatively.
There will be also an introduction to Adobe InDesign and Illustrator CS3, to give you the chance to experiment other industry standard software.
Although you are going to produce only one piece of work for this assignment, you will be able to produce:
 A logo
 A business card
 A flyer
 A Greetings card
 Other magazine covers
 Digital Artwork
Assignment guidelines:
1. Research magazines and evaluate theme, content, audience, messages.
2. Prepare a project plan (which must include information about typography, pictures, target audience, price)
3. Prepare sketches/stories in your magazine
4. Design your magazine using line, shape, text, texture, balance, contrast, unity, color, value and everything else you learned this term, to create an interesting composition
Project Brief
Magazine design demonstrates a designer’s ability to layout a page, organize information, and combine written and visual material intelligently.
You have been asked by a famous publisher to design the front and back cover of a magazine, and write a cover story which must be on a minimum of two pages spread (you can use existing magazines for inspiration).
1. Design a Magazine cover for a Computer Art magazine, April 2011 issue, and write specialist tutorial on any Software you feel comfortable with (2 pages spread). You must design your own illustration for the cover of the magazine, and use print screen when appropriate to illustrate your tutorial.
2. Design a Magazine cover for an Art magazine, April 2011 issue, with a cover story on Magritte (2 pages spread). You must take/design your own picture/artwork for the cover.
3. The Big Issue requires a cover that would best represent Newham, and a cover story on this borough (2 pages spread, issue 2011). You must take your own picture for the cover.
4. Design a Magazine cover for a music magazine, April 2011 issue, with a cover story on the obstacles for new comers (in the music industry, 2 pages spread).

PROCEDURES FOR CREATING A MAGAZINE

 Must have front and back cover.
Your cover MUST include:
A name, a price issues date and number, main and smaller story lines/featured articles, Bar Code and well balanced typography.
Size 8” X 10.5”, 150 pixels/inch (minimum).
 Cover and back pages must be illustrated.
 Must have table of contents page with article and page number.
 The article can be informative (tell about something), narrative (tell a story) persuasive (present an idea or argument about something you feel strongly about and may include evidence to support your argument), or descriptive (describing something).
 Magazine can include poetry, interviews, short story, music or movie reviews, advice columns, puzzles, riddles, recipes, fashion, etc.
 Magazines must also include advertisement. These advertisements must be original. (In other words, you must create the ad's yourself). You may write only two full-page ads. Your ads may be included on a feature page.
 Magazine must be a minimum of 6 pages and no more than 10 pages in length, including advertisements, table of content, article and front and back pages.
 Each page must be numbered. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>A logo represents your Business, or yourself. It can be designed using a lot of software packages. Today we are looking at using 3d software to design a simple logo.
Why Have 3d Logo?
If you start designing you logo using 3d you can then be able to animate the logo; if you intend to be in the media industry (filming, special effects), it is a considerable advantage to have a complex animated logo.
Originality
With 3d software you can guaranty room for originality for your animated logo.
Text or symbol Logos
Usually 3d animated logos use both as combining can help you create powerful and memorable logos.
The simple video tutorial is just introduction.</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>Photoshop creative exercise;-
Photoshop CS3 was used but higher versions can be used. In this Photoshop workshop, students do learn how to use the treshold tool and how to use layers, as well as import images into artwork. This is a basic tutorial which emphasis on using creativity with images downloaded. I used this least year (2009/2010), with the level 2 course and they have all enjoyed it. With this tutorial it is advised to let the students discover art in general. Giving a project to the students would be a good start, so they can research, sketch, prepare mood board, before starting with Photoshop.
It is advisable to encourage the students to used their own images, but for this picture I used:

Edward Weston Nude, 1936 (227N)
Wing http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs45/f/2009/061/0/e/Steampunk_Wings_by_rocknro8907.jpg
And any background will do

After that, just encourage students to do their own.
Lesson Objectives;
- Using tools
- Using layers
- Importing images</itunes:summary>

Use your drawing skills (drawing broad/sketch book or A3), draw an instructional version of this video to demonstrate your understanding.

Main Session part 2; Group Debate
Group 1- Make an effective research about the advantages of social web sites in view of arguing the fact that social websites are not dangerous to society, but beneficial.
Group 2- Make an effective research about the disadvantages of social web sites in view of arguing the fact that social websites are dangerous for vulnerable people etc...
You have 30 minutes to gather facts, and plan and prepare your debate.
Main Session part 4; Introduction to Dreamweaver & Workshop
For this workshop we will create a basic website using Dreamweaver and Fireworks. Le'ts start together
You will need to open and find Dreamweaver
1. Begin by creating a folder on your computer called "mysite" as all one word. Save all of your files related to this site into this folder. Create a folder within this folder called images.
2. Create the pages

index
about
portfolio
contact
links

3. add content - text is enough for today
4. link the pages
5. preview the site
Now watch the video + Tutor demo and explanations + take notes

REMINDER
TO DESIGN WEBSITE WE NEED:

A BRIEF
This brief will the base for our final design

RESEARCH
Research the Internet to see what the competitors do

PLAN
The plan will be an extension to the brief and will dictate how we design the website

WEB DESIGN AND GRAPHIC DESIGN SKILLS
A designer is able to use a good color combination for the design, also understand the difference between graphics for web and print. They also need to have the basics of coding (HTML and CSS) to be able to deliver a good project. Although we can use CMS; it is in the designer interest to know about web technology and design

A GOOD COLLECTION OF SOFTWARE PACKAGES

Although it is possible to design a website using NotePad or TexEdit is very advisable to have an array of software packages;
- animation software for designing banners
- design software to design graphics
- web design editor packages to visually (WYSIWYG/WYSYG/CMS)
- uploading software (FTP)

DOMAIN NAME
the url for the user to view your page

HOSTING
Server space to upload the site

Extra resources
DIDA

Homework

Start planning your own website for next week.

Closing the session: Reflect in your learning log or blog</itunes:summary>

Main Session part 2; Looking at blogging and Wordpress for designing websites
A blog is a website which is created with a content management software, making it easy to publish articles and news. It is so easy to use;- anyone can produce a website in an instant. CMS also allow techies to add functionality to the site with plugins, and other extras such as templates, making it even easier for us to get involved in the design of websites.
The most widely use CMS by designers are JOOMLA, WORDPRESS, DRUPAL.
Why having a blog is important for multimedia students?

Reflective diary
Practicing/developing skills in web design by developing templates, and experimenting
making the obvious difference between front-end and back-end
Can be used as a portfolio
Encourage development of writing skills
Reach out potential opportunities (further studies - jobs)
Share, enforce your knowledge

Let's start blogging!
Go to www.wordpress.com and set your blog, you don't have to make a site name with your name you can use a nickname.
Handouts will be given
Closing the session: Reflect in your learning log or blog</itunes:summary>

Present to the class 10 minutes max per group – other will evaluate your presentation
Cue Card: you must research different developments in Flash: Wii, mobile phones technology, Iphone apps. No copy and paste, try to understand what you read and expand your research.

Resources to support your with you with research:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Flash
You are level 2, I am not spoon-feeding on this one, you have got Information Literacy Skills (DISCOVER)

<itunes:summary>This long tutorial is part of a two weeks tutorial for Level 2 Multimedia, I will be including students' material, to be used and a brief later. The duration for this tutorial is 4 hours, and students will have to produce a basic movie poster using props that they will download from the Internet. I have attached a movie demonstration for students. It is important that teachers demonstrate their own techniques during the tutorial and go through tools with the students.

 <itunes:summary>For Teachers, and students
Subject: Finding and Installing Gimp Free Image Editing software on Vista
Material required : Internet/Windows operating system - Mac and Linux users can find information on the GIMP website. But I am working from a pc, so I am only doing the PC review.
Students will learn basic photo editing techniques. Students will analyze and evaluate the results.
Lesson Objectives;

Teachers will know how to find gimp
Know how to find resources on how to use the software and produce good work
See other alternative to more expensive software on the market

Get your students to design like pros with GIMP
Some teachers are called to plan a print media tutorial to realize that the organisation they are working with, can't afford the cost of software, or just don't have any good photo-editing/digital design software package.....
The good alternative to expensive software packages would be GIMP. You don't have to worry about the complexity of this program, online resources are easy to find. I came accross this free alternative to Photoshop, in 2008 when trying to help my students get their media business up and going; they were complaining about cost. So as a good teacher I searched, found, and tested a lot of alternatives, and GIMP was a good and stress free alternative.
What is so good about it:

Fast download
Quick to install don't have to wait ages (see video)
Free to download, use for private and education purposes
License issues - I am not aware of any
Easy to use, and has a lot of feature you find with other competitors
Languages; quite a lot not too sure which ones (I only know of French and English, because I am French)
Support, although it's free you can find info online
Has templates, and pre-formatted document (so it's ok if you don't have the knowledge)
I have to tested it to the full but I will start video tuts soon

You can carry out both simple and more complex tasks:

Digital Imagery
Photo-editing
Print media docs preparation</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Subject: Artwork Imaging - Theme: Advertising & Promotion - Club Flyers
For Level 2 Creative & Media
This video is a workshop support for students, helping with design skills, and ideas.
Lesson Objectives;

Watch video
Produce promotional material

Design rules

You must put you ideas on paper first - meaning sketches, plan
Start large and reduce as you need. Meaning create the poster first and then work out how the flyer will look. or just make the poster and then reduce to A5 or A6
Two fonts is ok, more think about it. Usually use a fancy font for the titles, remember the information needs to be understood.
Apply rulers before designing, otherwise information close to the edge/crop marks won't print
Extra information to be added you need to look at size, color matching (i.e: logos or extra images)
Proof-read
Try Different combinations
find some printing quotes on the Internet

<itunes:summary>Subject: Artwork Imaging - Theme: Advertising & Promotion - Club Flyers
For Level 2 Music & Media
Creative tutorial for Multimedia, Creative & Media, Media students on the level 2 course. Learning to design promotional flyers. Formative activity for level 2 Multimedia, Creative & Media, Media students. Design promotional flyers, learning material, class activities. Video attached at the end.
Material: A good library of club flyers to let the students explore genres and types (typographic, image etc...), teacher should prepare mood board of club flyers if possible.
Students will learn basic photo editing techniques. Students will analyze and evaluate the results.
Lesson Objectives;

Exploring Club Promotion
Plan, design edit, prepare flyer using appropriate tools
Present work
Reflect and think of how the above learning is going to be use in summative assignment

Starter Session: Review of last week's session
Main Session (part 1): Exploring different types of club flyers
As you are getting confidence with your design skills, you could advertise your services for making a flyers for a club night, a gig, a special bar event, a local pub. You need to understand some basic principles. It might be news for your; a lot of clubs rely on design students to design their promoting material to cut cost.
In small group research the following – What are the design elements in a club flyer?
Make a presentation to the class using PowerPoint:

RNB clubs
Garage Clubs
Reggae

Be creative with your presentation, and have a lot of information. See me for directions with your research and presentation. You don’t have to use PowerPoint, use presentation methods you have been taught by me.
Main Session (part 2): Plan a club flyer
In small groups:
Plan a flyer, with the customer brief bellow: Hi,
My name is Dj Rocco, and I am promoting my Funky Garage night that will be on the 30 December this year. I have to tell you that I want a Silver theme, and an urban look to the flyer. The name of the night is "Masquerade", the night will have a few djs (Jaman, Krouger, Gold Budha). We are offering a free drink to the ladies. I want different format (large, small).
Thank guys

Your duty as a group is to find what is missing in this brief. Also you will need to figure out what you need. Meaning that if you need a logo do you have to design it? You need to get a set of questions to give to this client for enlightenment.

Your group plan should include:
USP - Unique Selling Points for the flyer; translating the brief into an image that can sell the event (images, typography, color scheme etc...)
CP - Creative Concept; are you using an image and simple text? How are you going to avoid any copyrights issue, what will dominate on the flyer (image, date, address)?
Distribution also called Mechanics or format - meaning the different (print poster, flyers, cards etc...)

Main Session (part 3): Design (the fun part)
In Class Demonstration with Photoshop
Mini project Brief – see video bellow
 Design rules

You must put you ideas on paper first - meaning sketches, plan
Start large and reduce as you need. Meaning create the poster first and then work out how the flyer will look. or just make the poster and then reduce to A5 or A6
Two fonts is ok, more think about it. Usually use a fancy font for the titles, remember the information needs to be understood.
Apply rulers before designing, otherwise information close to the edge/crop marks won't print
Extra information to be added you need to look at size, color matching (i.e: logos or extra images)
Proof-read

<itunes:summary>This tutorial is one of the tutorials used in class with students when reviewing the media and beauty. We usually start the class with a review of the dove commercial (I have used this for the last 2 years) it's a great start to debate on "Digital Surgery"; you can view this video on youtube .
Then we go onto discussions watching this video and looking the pressures from the beauty industry with another Dove advert. Students usually like the debates, I usually divide the class in two groups, one that research "the good of the beauty industry" and the other group looks at "the ugly side of the beauty industry". We then carry on with a game call I'am not real, I pick from the Internet pictures of famous people in their natural (without digital surgery) state and compare with a glossy picture of them. They come to discuss in groups about the the phenomenon know as "Photoshop Surgery".
for reference teachers can use the following sites:

http://www.2dayfm.com.au

This picture on the righ is an interesting topic to discuss (source: http://themcode.wordpress.com)
The class is them showed a few demonstrations on computer enhancement from simple to advanced, and then they try it for themselves. The demonstration bellow is one of them. I will upload more later.</itunes:summary>
