Their distribution frequency can be:
  • Weekly
  • Monthly
  • Bi-annual
  • Forthnighly 

Magzines make an income through:

  • Sales
  • Advertiser (niche)

Creating a magazine takes a very careful plan. You will have to create a brief for your project.

They key to successful magazine design is starting with a clearly defined set of objectives. Before digitally creating any magazine, you must gather all necessary information that will help run a smooth design session. You should plan and prepare;

  • Magazine’s objectives,
  • Design requirements
  • Workflow requirements
  • Printing requirements
  • And most importantly the flat plans, Sketches and resources. Resources means adverts, images, stories, interviews, all text for your mag.

So when creating your brief bare in mind:

The Proposal (creative brief)

  • State the opportunity clearly
  • Problem, identification, and definition
  • Establish a clear idea of what is to be accomplished.
  • Identify the intended audience
  • Identify the specific problem
  • Define function of magazine
  • 3 objectives: SMART

Competition

  • Literature review with data
  • Their audience 
  • Their house style (design, look an feel)
  • What do they offer that you don’t in your magazine?
  • What do you offer that they don’t in your magazine?

Short Term Objectives

Long Term Objectives

Target audience, described, with demographics

  • You must target at least 2 groups (remember audience classification, life style,  income, all these will help you make vital decisions on the look, feel, styles)
  • Explanation of how magazine will attract and cater for each audience group
  • Data collection (who will be intersted in you mag?), a graphic presentation of the data is enough

•Paper choice
•Ink colours (CMYK)

 

Editorial/Plan of work

  • Step by step design process
  • How content will be produced with percentages
  • Design reqirements (software, Harwdare, other equipment)
  • Describe the content on each page for the 1first issue
  • Publishing schedule for 1st  issues:
    • When will you get Designs Ready by
    • When will you all text ready by
    • Whe will you get sketches ready by
    • When will you get interviews and stories ready by
  • Flat plan ( a visual board of all the pages of the Mag. Or newspaper)
    Sketches  a quick drawing to illustrate your ideas on each page
     
    Realistic deadlines, all key steps accounted for (who does what, team)

Printer’s Specifications:

–Number of pages
–Binding: Saddle-stitch , bounding or other
–Paper: weight, size, gloss or not, coated or not
–Ink: 4 or 2 colour process
–Embossing
 
Remember start asking yourself what makes a good magazine?
Some of the answers can be found through reliable media organisation (remember term 1- readership /audience data)
Others can be found by asking quesitons to a selected audience

-Research their audience
-Also research thier distribution models (online, portable devices, distributors, membership)
