Understanding display technology and creating wallpapers tutorial Level 2

This lesson is part of a 12 weeks tutorial teaching students about different Digital Design techniques, this lesson is targeted at level 2 groups (NOCN, BTEC, CITY & GUILDS). This tutorial sample is a good base for students to start demonstrating understanding on screen technology. Teachers have to implement their own techniques with this material.  This tutorial last for 12 weeks, because students have to build their own portfolio. 

Lesson Objectives:

  • Introduction to display technology
  • Creative use of Software to produce different types of wallpapers

Mobile phones, Internet, Library, 

Starter Session Show us/describe your wallpaper on your phone and tell us why you have chosen this one. A wallpaper is your device home screen.

 Activity 1-

Search for “wallpaper” using a search engine and see what’s coming up. Choose a nice wallpaper and tell us why you have chosen this one.

Activity 3

In small groups find the defnition of

  • Display Size
  • Aspect Ratio

You need to wright a small group report. (Continue this exercise as homework, working with your team using different communication channels; blog, social networks, e-mail, mobile networks etc….)

Activity 4- Creative Exercise

Produce and install a wallpaper on your phone. You can make your image using Photoshop or Illustrator; just make sure you save your work at the appropriate size for you phone. Meaning you have to make sure that you research your phone type screen size, and also you need to save your image at the right resolution. 

Instructions/Guidelines:

  • Research your phone screen size and resolution
  • Research different designs (proof must be on sketch book or mood board)
  • Sketch, Sketch, Sketch ideas…………………….
  • Design using software
  • Upload and Test the wallpaper on your phone (using USB, WIFI, Bluetooh, facebook, or e-mail)
  • Show me you design on your phone and print and mount your final design 
Extension Activity
Microsoft is running a competition for the best wallpaper using their logo. Remember the magic work here is corporate branding for screen. Design a Corporate wallpaper that can fit both a Microsoft product (tablet/mobile), and computer screens.

Newspaper Production session part 1 level 2 Multimedia

Over 2 weeks students are going to look at newspapers and create their own “Community Youth newspaper”. Each lesson last for 4 hours and students are encouraged to engaged in global media discussions.

This is the second session for the level 2 multimedia encourages students  to understand the difference between creating website using WordPress and Dreamweaver.

Main Session part 1;

Use your drawing skills (drawing broad/sketch book or A3), draw an instructional version of this video to demonstrate your understanding.

Main Session part 2; Group Debate

Group 1- Make an effective research about the advantages of social web sites in view of arguing the fact that social websites are not dangerous to society, but beneficial.

Group 2- Make an effective research about the disadvantages of social web sites in view of arguing the fact that social websites are dangerous for vulnerable people etc…

You have 30 minutes to gather facts, and plan and prepare your debate.

Main Session part 4; Introduction to Dreamweaver & Workshop

For this workshop we will create a basic website using Dreamweaver and Fireworks. Le’ts start together

You will need to open and find Dreamweaver

1. Begin by creating a folder on your computer called “mysite” as all one word. Save all of your files related to this site into this folder. Create a folder within this folder called images.

2. Create the pages

  • index
  • about
  • portfolio
  • contact
  • links

3. add content – text is enough for today

4. link the pages

5. preview the site

RESEARCH Research the Internet to see what the competitors do
PLAN The plan will be an extension to the brief and will dictate how we design the website
WEB DESIGN AND GRAPHIC DESIGN SKILLS A designer is able to use a good color combination for the design, also understand the difference between graphics for web and print. They also need to have the basics of coding (HTML and CSS) to be able to deliver a good project. Although we can use CMS; it is in the designer interest to know about web technology and design
A GOOD COLLECTION OF SOFTWARE PACKAGES

Although it is possible to design a website using NotePad or TexEdit is very advisable to have an array of software packages;

- animation software for designing banners

- design software to design graphics

- web design editor packages to visually (WYSIWYG/WYSYG/CMS)

- uploading software (FTP)

DOMAIN NAME the url for the user to view your page

Assessment
Your goal this term is to investigate, and make a presentation about a specific career in the multimedia/media sector.
Using your information literacy skills gained last term, you will research the specific routes in multimedia/media for students, helping them making a choice in their development/studies.
1. Set your Goals
• Identity the goals for your research.
• What do you want to include on your presentation?
• What type of interaction do you want?
• What will the content include?
• For whom are you designing the presentation?
2. Research Before you Create
Read books, browse internet, make a note of the elements that you would like to include in your presentation.
3. Select Appropriate Content
Think about what kind of information you want to source, generate, and share that would be of interest to others.
4. Plan your presentation
Create a plan or storyboard to plan for the general layout and appearance of the presentation and how and where props/resources can be linked.
It is important to plan where the where the props will be and how they will be connected before implementing your presentation plan.
5. Choose the Right Tools.
Determine what tools to use to create the presentation.
6. Test Your Presentation
Test your presentation with a variety of users with different levels of understanding. Their feedback will help you to improve your presentation.

Teachers have to implement their own techniques with this material.  This tutorial last for 12 weeks, because students have to produce different animations by themselves to build their own portfolio. A sample student material will be available to download at a later date.
