Ideas for teaching light and Photography

RR1010c

While browsing the Internet for research purposes, I came across this website which I think is a wonderful to use with students in Photography and multimedia technology.

RR1010c Ideas for teaching light and PhotographyI have to admit that although the site is not directly focusing on photography, the imagery is great for exploration. While most teachers in photography are exploring light with their students in a conventional manner; and the most I have seen is “painting with light”, this way of exploring light is great as it opens the visual mind to visual arts. Once one has found a safe & sound technique of  getting students to build an under clothing light system, the door to creativity is open to exploration. It is definitely something that both photography, and multimedia teachers can explore further, getting the students to work on interesting subjects.

Resources to teach “valuing Diversity” in Media

I came accross this website this month when I add to teach students on the level 1 course about “cultural differences” and stumbled accross this website which I think is a very good resource for media teachers to use in the classroom.

This helps students on different level and the resource is free to uses with not hidden agenda.

This site also encourage students and people like me to take a leap and see that diversity cannot stop you from getting what you want, but help.

This is also very good in helping girls in Media, as well as demonstrating than getting a job in media and being from a non-white heritage is possible. As I always stumble across difficult questions in the class from ethnic minority students, this site helps uncover the stigma around media and journalism.

I find the diversity game very interesting. This a very very good resource to use. But I will guide anyone into using this site, you will have to do the hard work yourself.

My brain is taking a break right now, for the luxury of spending, spending and shopping all day long. This year was a  stressed year, I have to see both mind and beauty therapist all summer to get back to myself.

Photoshop creative exercise;-

Photoshop CS3 was used but higher versions can be used. In this Photoshop workshop, students do learn how to use the treshold tool and how to use layers, as well as import images into artwork. This is a basic tutorial which emphasis on using creativity with images downloaded. I used this least year (2009/2010), with the level 2 course and they have all enjoyed it.  With this tutorial it is advised to let the students discover art in general. Giving  a project to the students would be a good start, so they can research, sketch, prepare mood board, before starting with Photoshop.

It is advisable to encourage the students to used their own images, but for this picture I used:

After that, just encourage students to do their own.

Lesson Objectives;

- Using tools

- Using layers

- Importing images

Learner Assessment Booklet

Unit Title: Using Teamwork Skills

Project Brief: Team Project

Your goal this term is to develop a multimedia project as a team, minimum of three members per team.

Ideas for project:

  • Movie Poster
  • Social enterprise
  • An event

The choice is yours but the project has to be a group project. Think of the multimedia skills you have gained this year and use them to create your own project. I will act as a facilitator, supporting, advising and guiding you. But you will have to use your independent learning skills to produce most of the work.

Sample projects:

In the last academic year;

  • Two members of the Multimedia Level 2 groups, created a social enterprise called Press N Play Media. With this unit they have developed both media and team working skills.

  • Other members have created www.newham2012.com an informational website about the Olympics.

Despite all odds, I want to be the first to congratulate you on the project. You have demonstrated your ability to work as a team, sharing all the work and not giving up despite the very tight deadlines. If I had my own business, I will definitely offer a job because you have the skills that employers need. And you are only young.

I am sure that we have demonstrated our ability to take any challenge and deliver within deadlines. I have for my part tried my best to show you the route, but if I have missed anything, you were still able to “DIG THE BRAIN” our catch phrase during these 9 hours challenge.

If you ever want to set your own Design Agency together, I can only tell the world to watch for this young creative team.
