In this session you are going to research Flip book Animations, then make a simple flip book animation.
Starter Session
HAVE YOU SEEN THIS FLIP BOOK COMMERCIAL?
RESEARCH ACTIVITY
When was the first Flip book animation created?
What was the original term used for flip book then?
Did flip book put Great Britain on the history?
Why did the French man Pierre-Hubert Desvignes loose the battle of the flip book?
What was aim of inventing the flip book?
PRACTICAL ACTIVITY
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
- Paper
- Pen/pencils/colour pencils/Paint (depending how far you want to go with the experiment)
- Scissors
- Glue
You will create a flip book animation in group or individually
- To begin, plan your animation; write a short script. Think of a simple story- what would you like your character to do? Stories need a beginning, middle and end. You might need to spend more than 5 minutes, thinking about your ideas for characters and the animation theme. You can start to sketch ideas on a sheet of paper.
- Create your flip book pages by setting a layout on a A3 page, then cut it out or use the template bellow and cut it out (you might need to print more than one page).
- You will be putting a drawing on each page of your flip book, and make it move on each page, this could include a walking cycle.
- To ensure you are set when you start drawing, draw your scene and character on your first frame/paper and last scene on the last frame/paper first. Then fill in the “in-between scenes” by tracing (called onion skinning) the character/scene and each time slightly adjust their position on the page.
- Then glue your animation together and enjoy it!
Advice on Flip book animation
- Get a friend to do a movement in slow motion so that you can see how actions are performed.
- To depict fast motion you will need few drawings and to depict slow motion you will need a lot of drawings.
Look at the movies after the short video tutorial to get inspiration.
